HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUP?
THE DEPARTED (2006)
VS
THE INVESTIGATION (2016)
the mise on scene is very similar in this comparison,

- the lighting is clearer in 'the departed' because it was a hollywood made film, professionally so its clearer and focused, our film was a home made film where we didnt have access to most of the things that they did but we still manged to show characters faces so that they were recognisable
-props, again we were limited for time and budget so we couldnt get guns or badges which 'the departed' actors clearly display, but then again our characters are criminal master minds not the police officers (Jordan - props still wern't accessible)
- background, we were very limited in the places we could film some parts, we had to take into considiration that it is a school so there will be problems with making it look realistic enough like the real police office such as 'the departed' does so effortlessly. we should've put more effort into covering the speakers and the clutter on the desk to make it at least a less busy area.
-costume, both characters in both films are in very smart dress and suits. of course 'the investigation' is more modern than 'the departed' so the exact fashion is different and the colour schemes of the coustumes have changed otherwise we are spot on, especially with the black replicating the mood
our media product has casted a diverse group of people for a variaty of roles and many groups in socioty are represented -some more thsn others. our main actors/actresses are black/mixed.
the reasons for black representation are:
-PERSONALLY I BELIEVE THE BLACK COMMUNITY IS NEVER REALLY REPRESENTED ENOUGH IN FILMS/MEDIA PROJECTS, THEY MAY GET ROLES BUT NOT FREQUENTLY GETTING MAIN/LEADING ROLES AS THEY EITHER DON'T FIT THE CASTING DESCRIPTION (SAYING THAT OUR CASTING DESCRIPTION WASNT SPECIFIC TO ANY RACE).
-SECONDLY, I THINK THAT HAVING BLACK LEADS BOTH MALE AND FEMALE WILL ALLOW OUR PRODUCT TO REACH FURTHER TO A WIDER RANGE OF PEOPLE, THE PEOPLE WHO WOULDNT PARRTICULARLY WATCH IF THE LEADS WERE WHITE, POSSIBLY BECAUSE THEY MIGHT FEEL THEY CANT RELATE TO THE CHARACTER OR IF THEY FEEL THEY AREN'T REPRESENTED SO THEY WANT NOTHING TO DO WITH IT.

IN OUR ENTIRE FILM WE DO HAVE EXYRAS WHO SHOW UP ON SCREEN FOR SHORT BURSTS, WE DONT HAVE JUST THE ONE SOCIAL GROUP BECAUSE WE ARE NOT SPECIFIC IN THE CASTING SHEETS AND ALSO BECAUSE WE ARE FILMING IN LONDON. LONDON IS A VERY DIVERSE AND MULTICULTURAL ARE SO WE PREFERED TO EMBRACE THAT FACTOR WITH OUR PROJECT RATHER THAN BEING PICKY AND LEAVING PEOPLE OUT- IT WOULDNT BE AUTHENTIC.

BECAUSE WE FILMED IN A SCHOOL ENVIROMENT FOR SOME SHOTS IT GAVE US EASY ACCESS TO DIFFERENT SOCIAL GROUPS WHICH MADE THINKING ABOUT REPRESENTATION EASIER AS WE COULD CONSTANTLY ASK SOCIAL GROUPS HOW THEY FELT WE WERE DOING AT REPRESENTING THEM.
